One of the many roles in which Sean Penn plays well and is alternative characters: in this case a seemingly ordinary man who tries to be well incorporated into a social and work, but fails. And 'victim of the American system, ground and then regurgitated from his mouth.

This film is not based on the usual pattern sfruttatissimo that part of the average man disadvantage, struggle, struggles and wins realizing the American dream. No, this Sean Penn is a shy, awkward and ultimately frustrated and desperate little man with a classic American house that tries to keep a job without ever succeeding, and rejected by the normal left his wife, whom he still loves.
Even the last hope to cling (to open his own business with a friend) fails, so little by little began the slow and inexorable decline in psychological blows all his anger against a society that rejects him and that prevents him from being happy. Focuses entirely on his malaise on President Nixon, sign up to a corrupt society that cancels it.
Sam is the "normal" man with a correct and fair view of the world that at one point finds himself poised between normality and insanity, until you pass the limit.
The film tries to follow arguments, the reasons leading to this state, not to mention the shiny and sharable analysis of some aspects.
